Día de Muertos: Where the Past Is Present
This promo animation was created for an art exhibition by the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, dedicated to the vibrant Mexican holiday, the Day of the Dead. The exhibition honors the life and legacy of Ray Patlán (1946–2024), a renowned Chicago muralist and painter who passed away in April.
To reflect the exhibition’s theme and tone, I chose a calm and artistic approach to represent the essence of Día de Muertos while integrating elements of Chicago’s culture and landscape. The animation highlights nearly seventy works from the museum’s permanent collection, showcasing popular art created by generations of artists.
This exhibition emphasizes the power of collective memory and art’s ability to reflect society. It pays tribute not only to Ray Patlán but also to those who have lost their lives to violence, making this a poignant and meaningful celebration of life, death, and remembrance.
